Guiding Principles

The following principles arose from our first meetings as a collective and have provided the foundations for collaboration across all four pods.

  • Shifting power

As a project team, we are driven to explore radically new power dynamics for mental health on a global scale. We are committed to bolstering the voices of those disadvantaged or marginalised within biomedical frameworks of health care and mental health treatment. We support activist movements to address the structural determinants of inequalities and prioritise decolonisation of mental health systems.

  • Co-producing outcomes and concepts

Through discussion and collaboration, we are working to identify and propose better concepts of mental health that matter to those personally affected in diverse contexts. Our research process is grounded in the principles of co-production and centres the local as a key site of creativity and innovation.

  • Social determinants

Through discussion, we are building understanding of the social mechanisms underlying mental health issues and thinking about interventions accordingly. In discussing poverty and inequality, we go beyond the dichotomies of ‘Global North/South’ to address key themes in mental health that cut across national boundaries.

  • Integrated mental health

Our project aims to support good mental health across health and societal sectors from the bottom up, starting with those most affected and the communities they live in.
